Registered Schnauzers

                                General Information

We have found the Toy Schnauzer is a perfect fit for our family.  They can run outside all day supervising the ranch chores and then come inside and join us as couch potatoes, wanting only to snuggle and sleep on the couch with their people.

We have focused on the toy size Schnauzer.  Their size being no more than eleven pounds and no taller than ten inches at the shoulder.  Basically they are a huge dog packed into a small body.  They just don't know they are little.

The Schnauzer is a German dog that originated in Germany in the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries.  The term "Schnauzer" is the German word for snout because of their distinctive bearded snout.  Although the Schnauzer is considered a terrier type dog, they do not have the typical terrier temperament.  They are kinder, calmer, less hyperactive and easier to train than a terrier.

The original Schnauzer was about the same size as the modern Schnauzer breed and were used as rat catchers, yard dogs and guard dogs. They have high energy levels and are very intelligent dogs.  They can live out side, but love to spend time inside with their family.  They make excellent pets as they are extremely loyal companions.  They are rarely aggressive toward strangers (very seldom meeting one), although quick to sound the alarm at a perceived threat.  The Schnauzer is considered hypo-allergenic, they don't shed, and if bathed regularly don't seem to have that "dirty dog" smell.

Schnauzers are known for their distinctive beard and long feathery eyebrows.   Typically they are shaved down the back while the hair on their legs is left long.  They do require some attention to grooming with their long coats but grooming can be considered minimal with daily brushing and hair cuts every six to eight weeks.
